Coffee News

We’ve had a great summer, and we hope you have, too!  Now that we’re all back in town, remember that you can get your regular caffeine fix from us, in an environmentally- and socially-conscious form!  Our products are all organically grown and produced, and are all certified Fair-Trade by TransFair USA.  Buying fairly-traded coffees helps small farmers make a good living while being able to provide medical care for their families and an education for their children.  And since the coffee is bought directly from the farmers, we can offer it at competitive prices!  We also can provide your caffeine needs in more forms than just coffee—we have English Breakfast Tea and Hot Cocoa.  Equal Exchange has just expanded their line of teas (including a new decaf offering), and now offers new chocolate bars!  Let us know if you are interested in these or any other of their products.

Meeting of the Board of Trustees – September 17, 2006

The following is a summary of highlights to be submitted to the board for approval.

The meeting was called to order by chair Sylvia Oster at 7:02 p.m.  Present were Sylvia Oster, chair; Will Barratt, vice chair; Sara Laughlin, secretary; John Taylor, treasurer; Sam Martland, member-at-large; and Carolyn Brown, office administrator.  Also present for the first part of the meeting was Trinity Grubb, guest.  Absent were Elisabeth Friedman, member-at-large; and Miren Beristain, past chair.  The chalice was lit by S. Oster who shared a brief inspirational reading with the group.
Learning Tree Report.   It was reported that Joyce Cox, custodian, has concerns regarding cleaning issues and is uncertain about from whom she is to take direction.  Since J. Cox is employed by the board, S. Oster appointed S. Martland to serve as her contact.
Minutes of the August 20, 2006, meeting were presented by S. Laughlin and approved as presented.
Treasurer's Report. J. Taylor reported that the previous evening’s auction brought in $1,702 with still more to be collected.
Office Administrator's Report.  C. Brown reported that no further contact had come from the pagan group which wished to rent the building on a regular basis.  She also reported on confirmation from the insurance company that the church is liable for the claims made so far as the result of Marshall Alexander's accident.  Regarding DSL service, Verizon has stated DSL is not available at the church’s location.  A request has been made to Jamax for a new dumpster.  C. Brown will be taking two vacation days in October.

Guest.  Trinity Grubb requested rental of the church by the Circle of Sacred Grove, a pagan group associated with the Living Tapestry Tradition. (This is not the same group which requested ongoing use.)  The kitchen, sanctuary, and social hall would be used on October 21, beginning at 10 a.m. for workshops followed by a feast and ritual.  Clean up would be completed by 9 p.m.  Board’s consensus was that the space may be made available for the rate stated in the rental policy for up to three hours of use but not for the additional amount noted for hours beyond three.  The rental would require an advance payment of $300 to cover the $250 rental fee plus a $50 cleaning deposit.  S. Martland suggested rental income or a portion of such income be placed in a depreciation account.
Board Chair’s Comments.  S. Oster presented an agenda for the Board and Committee Chair Retreat scheduled for Saturday, September 30, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  She reported that she had received a letter from a manager of Fire Mountain Restaurant inviting the church to participate in their free  “Church of the Week’s”
program which would enable the church to have its name placed on the restaurant’s marquee and to put up a display on a bulletin board.  Plans for Heartland District Cluster Meetings were noted, and W. Barratt suggested the church pay registration fees for any chairs who attend.  S. Oster also mentioned an upcoming Campus Ministry program.
Committee Reports.  Discussion took place regarding the liaisons charged with communicating information to the board from the various committees.  Liaisons for the year will be S. Oster, Ministerial Search and Pastoral Care; J. Taylor, Finance; S. Laughlin, Membership/Social Activities; W. Barratt, Grounds and Program/Worship; S. Martland, Building and Children’s RE; E. Friedman, Adult RE and Social Action; and M. Beristain, Denominational Affairs and Music.
New Business.  S. Oster presented board members with magnets from General Assembly.  Secretary S. Laughlin announced she would be out of town during the October meeting and another would need to take minutes.  S. Oster asked W. Barratt to do so.
     Old Business.  None presented.
The meeting was adjourned and the chalice extinguished at 8:42 p.m.

Respectfully submitted, Sara Laughlin, Secretary

Thoughts from the Chair of the Board of Trustees

The Labor Day Picnic was a great success with many in attendance and wonderful food (especially that chocolate cake) and camaraderie.  The children were a joy to watch and it was a good chance to see some folks after the summer months.

The Water Service was a nice reminder of where we had been and share in the joy of being together again.

The Service Auction was spectacular.  We have so many people to thank but especially I want to thank our coordinators:  Doddie Stone and Miren Beristain.  All who attended had a great time, enjoyed wonderful food, had fun with the raffles and came out like bandits with the many services and goods.  Again, thanks to all who donated items, helped cook, offered services, set up and cleaned up and counted money (lots of it).  Thanks also to the Auctioneers who did a fabulous job and made it more fun for everyone.

Bill Breeden's sermon on our UU Principles was inspirational and we are glad to have him in our pulpit on a regular basis.  He brings out the best in many of us.  It's good to talk to Glenda too.  The children's participation in the Special Music was truly magic.  It was delightful and we can be very glad we have such talent in our adults and kids.  Thank you, Louise and company.  It was an unexpected treat for all of us.

At the September Board meeting we made final plans for the Board and Chair Retreat scheduled for Saturday, September 30th.  We will review budgets for the committees, set goals and schedules, review the Master Calendar and exchange information and communication.  All Board members and chairs of committees are supposed to attend.  Any other members or friends who want to know how things work at the committee level may also attend.

We are planning to accept an invitation from Fire Mountain (restaurant) to be the church of the week.  We will be featured on their marquee and we are to post any information we wish on a bulletin board inside.  This will be a good way for us to advertise what we have to offer.  If you have ideas about what to post, please let me know.  So far we are planning a picture of the building, picture of the mural, the 7 Principles, maybe the "Uncommon Denomination" bumper sticker and other relevant information (address, time of services, phone, website, etc.).
So we have been busy, we have been happy and we have been inspired.  I hope you'll continue with us on the journey.

In faith,
Sylvia

ARE YOU NEW TO UU?

Have you visited our Sunday morning service within the past few months?   Are you curious about the diversity of beliefs within our congregation?  Would you like to learn more about our religious traditions?  If you said yes to any of the above questions, then here’s how to find some of your answers.

There will be 3 sessions of “Soup and Conversation” on October 8, 15, and 22 after our regular service (approximately 12:15 to 1:30).  A light luncheon will be served and there will be opportunity to learn about Unitarian Universalist history and organization.

SESSION ONE (Oct. 8): “Let’s Get Acquainted”…  An opportunity to learn names and share stories about our religious or non-religious experience.

SESSION TWO (Oct. 15):  “The Unitarian Universalist Story”… A short overview of histories of the Unitarian and the Universalist denomination.

SESSION THREE (Oct 22):  “The Terre Haute Congregation”… Meet the leadership and learn about the activities in our local congregation.

All sessions are open to both “old-timer” UU’s and “newer-timer” inquirers.  Rev. Doddie Stone, a retired UU minister, will facilitate the conversations.

SEPTEMBER 16 FUUN AUCTION WAS A SUCCESS !!!

Our September 16, 2006 FUUN Service/Live auction was a tremendous success.   Thanks to our members and friends, we raised approximately $2,000.    It would not have been possible without the willingness of our members and friends to donate their time, money, and tangible items.   We are very fortunate to have received such a positive response to this event and I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

There are still a few outstanding requests.  We have some service requests that needed to be matched with a willing donor.  The list follows.  If the parties involved are still in need of the services and the donors still willing to donate their time, they should negotiate prices and communicate this information to our treasurer, John Taylor.

Please note that some of these requests may have been met during our live auction.  If services are still needed, please feel free to contact the willing donor.
