I would be true, for there are those who trust me;

I Would be pure, for there are those who care;

I would be strong, for there is much to suffer;

I would be brave, for there is much to dare;

I would be friend of all--the foe, the friendless;

I would be giving, and forget the gift.

I would be humble, for I know my weakness;

I would look up--and laugh--and love—and lift

UUCEL ANNOUNCES AUGUST 17

CommUnity forUm:

"The Gospel According to Evolution:

The Marriage of Science and Religion"

The Universalist Unitarian Church of East Liberty (UUCEL) announces its Thursday, August 17 commUnity forUm, to be held at the Jackson Symphony Orchestra Building, 215 W. Michigan Ave., in downtown Jackson from 7-9 pm.  The August 17 presentation by the Rev. Michael Dowd is entitled "The Gospel According to Evolution:  The Marriage of

Science and Religion."  The commUnity forUm series is sponsored by the UUCEL and is independent from JSO.  Admission is free, though donations to help cover costs are appreciated.  Rev. Dowd’s presentation will explore how the epic of evolution enriches and expands our spiritual traditions.  Dowd's "Great Story" of evolution is based on science, yet is infused with sacred meaning and awe.  He will explore many of the most common "evolutionary epiphanies" that people experience when mainstream science is presented in ways that integrate a meaningful creation story.   He and his wife, science writer Connie Barlow, are itinerant "evolutionary evangelists," and have presented talks and sermons on a sacred understanding of evolution in hundreds of venues during their four years of living on the road.   Rev. Dowd will also be giving a related sermon on Sunday, Aug. 20 at the church's 11 am service, near Jackson.  CommUnity forUms are free and open programs to facilitate dialogue about the challenging issues of our time.  The Fall commUnity forUm schedule will be announced and available at "The Gospel According to Evolution."

More information on the commUnity forUm series, the UUCEL and its mission can be obtained by viewing its website, www.libertyuu.org, or by calling

Letter from Frank & Julie Young

Greetings from the U.K. to our UU friends. Our stay at Woodbrooke is drawing to a close. We are enjoying our time here but are eager to return to family and friends in the U.S. We want to see our children and grandchildren and welcome the one who was born in April.

We had a two week 'holiday' and visited Canterbury, Dover, York and London. We went to the theatre in London and it had a hearing loop, which meant I could easily hear all the dialogue. Hearing loops are available everywhere.

We have seen many castles, crypts and cathedrals. When we visited Warwick Castle, we found and photographed a plaque in the conservatory (a green house) that talked about early Unitarians in the area.

York is especially interesting as it has Roman ruins as well as buildings from the 9th and 11th centuries up to the present.

We think of you often and hope all is well. Frank adds his greetings to mine.
 Julie Young.

Monthly Meeting of the Board of Trustees
June 18, 2006

The following is a summary of highlights.
Complete minutes will be prepared and submitted to the board for approval.

     The meeting was called to order by chair Miren Beristain at 7:15 p.m. Present were Miren Beristain, Sara Laughlin, John Taylor, Sue Warner, Elisabeth Friedman, and Carolyn Brown.  Absent were Will Barratt and Jean Kristeller.  Sylvia Oster was present as incoming chair. Present to report on matters relating to Learning Tree and Building Committee was Bill Carper.
     Learning Tree Report.   Learning Tree owners Marianne Alderton-Gordon and Becky McCormick had been invited to the meeting but were unable to attend.  M. Beristain and B. Carper will meet with them before the next board meeting to discuss various topics relating to ways to foster a closer relationship and ongoing communications.  B. Carper suggested a standard monthly invoice including rent plus accumulation of utility expenses be submitted to Learning Tree so they may be kept aware of amounts.
 B. Carper shared carpet samples from Smiddy’s Carpets which he contacted in response to the Learning Tree’s request for carpet replacement.  Basic carpeting in the commons area and carpeting with circle insets in the classrooms will cost $4,332. A meeting will Learning Tree owners will be set up to select new carpet installation.
     Minutes of the May 2006 meeting were presented by S. Laughlin and approved as presented.
     Treasurer’s Report was presented by J. Taylor who provided a written report of the pledge campaign which noted that 40% of the dollar amount goal had been reached.  He also provided a spread sheet with budgeted amounts for the year.  Discussion followed regarding placement of assorted investments into a managed account at Old National Bank.  The two checking and two savings accounts at First Financial Bank would also be moved to ONB.  The safe deposit box would remain at First Financial Bank.  The proposal was approved unanimously.
     Board Chair’s Comments.  A proposed policy regarding alcohol use at events was discussed.  M. Beristain volunteered to merge it into the current policies for rental of space by individuals or groups so policies may be reviewed together.  M. Beristain and S. Oster will be traveling to General Assembly in St. Louis next week as the congregation’s official delegates.  Rev. Doddie Stone will also go, and the Mortons may attend a portion of the conference as well.  The chair’s gavel was passed from M. Beristain to S. Oster.
     Office Administrator's Report.  C. Brown reported lawn care expense is increasing from $50 to $65.  New directory is being prepared.  Upcoming dates on the master calendar were shared.  She will be out of the office June 20 to June 25 or 26.

Committee Reports.   Sylvia Oster reported for the Ministerial Search Committee that the Congregational Record is near completion.  A flier is planned to be made available for sharing at General Assembly which would refer interested individuals to the web site where the record may be found.  She also stated that members of the Danville congregation came last week and met with representatives of our committee for guidance of their anticipated search.
     New Business.  S. Laughlin suggested an ad hoc Arts Fair Committee be appointed to investigate the possibility of creating such an event on the church grounds.  S. Oster will consider this for the next meeting.
     Old Business.  Next board meeting will be July 16.  Information about a photo directory will be investigated.
     The meeting was adjourned and the chalice extinguished at 9:14 p.m.

Respectfully submitted by S. Laughlin, secretary
