Session 28:  Native Americans Have Taught Us Many Things

 

Lead Teacher: William Carper   

Assistant Teacher: Miren Beristain

 

Goals:

  • To develop respect and appreciation for Native American cultures.
  • To become aware of the many things Native Americans contributed to our lives.
  • Be respectful of everyone’s traditions, and be thankful for gifts in every day life.

 

Circle time: 

·        Invite children to look at pictures of Native Americans.

·        Talk about specific Native American groups in our area.

·        Review why Native Americans were called “Indians”

·        Review how they helped the first European colonists survive in No. America.

·        Discuss the many contributions Native Americans made to our lives.

o       Corn and other foods

o       Farming and use of natural resources

o       Appreciation for the gifts of the earth and sharing life with other animals

·        Have the older children read, Dream Wolf by Paul Goble

 

Activity: 

  • Feathers
    • Review the sacredness of feathers to Native American tribes
    • Discuss the rituals in which feathers were used by Native Americans

 

Material List:

  • Feathers for the students to take home  (in mailbox – got any suggestions for where to get feathers?)

 

Closing Ritual:

·        Gather the children in a circle for a time of silence.  Invite each person to name one way Native Americans have influenced modern life.

·        Ask each person to state one thing for which they are thankful.

·        Extinguish the chalice. Thank the children individually for participating and remind them to take home their feathers.
